A special highlight in the Salzburger Land is the consecration of herbs on Assumption Day, 15 August. The festival is often combined with a blessing of herbs in the local churches! Bundles of different herbs and wild flowers are tied together: for example, a beautiful rose (for Mary) or an impressive mullein, a soothing yarrow, a calming valerian, a natural arnica, a wonderfully fragrant camomile, a wonderfully aromatic St. John's wort and a refreshing peppermint.
Once consecrated, the herb bush is hung up at home in the Herrgottswinkel to dry. According to traditional folklore, the blessed herbs are a real blessing for family and livestock! They protect against misfortune and illness throughout the year, protect the house and farm from lightning, and bring good luck in love and the blessing of children.
