Ostseite Moor

Hof bei Salzburg, Salzburg, Österreich

On this side of the nature reserve, countless birds can be found.

By mid to late March, the Meadow Pipits return. Around the same time, the Eurasian Curlew arrives, which can be heard with its loud, flute-like call. By the end of April, the Bluethroats are back. They breed on the moorland with up to ten pairs. They build their nests from dry grass stalks, fine roots, moss, and dry leaves, usually on the ground next to a larger plant like a troll flower or similar. The female lays 5 or 6 deep blue-green eggs, and after an incubation period of 13 days, the young hatch. After about 12 days, they leave the nest on foot and scatter individually in the tall grass. They are only capable of flying after another 5 days. This behavior is their strategy against nest predators that are always waiting for an opportunity. The young birds then stay in the breeding area for another 4 weeks before they slowly migrate towards Africa, where they winter south of the Sahara. Through the recapture of ringed birds, it has been proven that more than half of our breeding Bluethroats were also born here. During the bird migration (spring), the song of the nightingale can be heard to the east of the path in the bushes. Along the path, several orchid species can also be admired (marsh twayblade, cuckoo's orchid, sword-leaved forest orchid, green forest hyacinth, etc.), all of which are protected by law.
