The exhibition at Hotel Schloss Fuschl pays tribute to Empress Elisabeth of Austria – “Sissi” – whose tumultuous life and tragic fate have made her one of the most fascinating figures in history. The Sissi films of the 1950s, directed by Ernst Marischka, permanently influenced her modern image and enchanted entire generations. Romy Schneider's portrayal became world-famous, but the role also weighed heavily on her as the public continuously associated her with the empress and drew parallels between both biographies.
Schloss Fuschl served as one of the most important filming locations, taking on the role of Schloss Possenhofen, the real childhood home of Elisabeth. By combining original objects of the empress with memorabilia from the films, the exhibition aims to convey an authentic image of Elisabeth. At the same time, it shows how strongly the cinematic interpretations have shaped the public image of the empress – more so than nearly any other historical figure.
